SPAR has introduced introducing ten organic seeds from Austrian agriculture under the private label brand "SPAR wie früher" (SPAR as before), thus meeting the increasing demand for former varieties and regional products.

The industrialisation of agriculture and seed monopolies has contributed to the loss of about ¾ of all crops in the past 100 years worldwide according to estimations by the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations. Genetic engineering and climate change account for the remainder.

Drexel: "Building on our heritage"

For SPAR the revival and preservation of crop varieties has been a major concern for many years. "In the association Noah's Ark we have found the ideal partner to share our passion for forgotten plants and seeds," says Dr. Gerhard Drexel, CEO of SPAR Austria. "We want to re-discover old varieties, preserve them and bring them closer to our customers. In the end we need to build on our heritage.

"Ten organic heritage seeds from "SPAR as before"

Just in time for the gardening season SPAR extended the "SPAR as before" range by ten rare organic seeds in association with Noah's Ark. The range includes:

 - organic cucumber 'Dekan'
 - organic pepper 'Ochsenhorn'
 - organic pepper 'Roter Augsburger'
 - organic tomato 'Naama'
 - organic lettuce 'Roter Butterhäuptl'
 - organic tomato 'Justens Gelbe'

The varieties have been available in SPAR, EUROSPAR and INTERSPAR stores since the beginning of March. All seeds come from 100% Austrian organic farming and cost around €2.99. The small but growing organic range "SPAR as before" will be expanded in the future in cooperation with Noah's Ark.
